Chapter Two

Set Your Goals

  1. The author covered so many things in this chapter. The most useful being how to get out of a ticket; if I remember that in the future. I also thought it was interesting the difference between a fight and an argument, and how Gottman's successful couples argued but didn't fight.

    1. I liked when I/we learned about Gottman in Human Bio, but it was interesting to read more in depth about what it was that he did.

    2. I agree about how he talked about getting out of a ticket, but wouldn't that be bad at the same time?

    3. I don't know if it's any worse than persuading anyone else in an argument.

    5. I feel like it's not a bad thing to talk yourself out of a ticket- better than trying to cry your way out of one haha

  2. It was good to learn the main goals in this chapter. I guess I didn't really realize there would be specific goals, other than trying to achieve what you want from the argument, but the ones that he explains make a lot of sense.

    2. Yeah I thought winning an argument was a lot simpler than he is making it seem.

    3. I hope the main goals are established at the beginning of each chapter or this could get confusing.

  3. He really uses examples of trying to seduce people to do things by either changing their mood, mind, or even their willingness to do something. I think that this could be very bad if it was used by someone evil.

    1. I think it could be bad in any situation; For example if someone manages to persuade someone to name their kid a bad name like North West

    2. This could be used badly and in a good way lol I guess it just depends on the kind of person you are and hopefully evil people don't have a sense of rhetorical or maybe they even have a more advanced sense of it :0

    3. I'm sure a lot of people that come across as "evil" do know about rhetoric, and a few probably do know how to utilize it to their advantage, but i'm thinking of people that lived before the 20th century. I wouldn't know very many people in the 21st/20th century that would know extensively about rhetoric.

    4. Yeah or you could convince someone to change their mind, which results in you getting your way- not all people winning arguments are bad people

    5. I think persuading someone to get what you want can be kind of evil whether its one of the nicest people or someone just flat out evil.So it just depends on how you look at it.

  4. I thought the South beach diet book was interesting because it put an image in your mind that would persuade anybody to buy this book to have a BEACH body. Very clever advertising haha.

    1. I hadn't even thought of that before reading the chapter.

    2. That was my favorite example! If the author brings up more examples like that, the book should stay interesting!

    3. I agree this example was a real eye opener to me when it comes to advertising.. Very skilled tricksters is all they are.

  5. I love how the author brings historical events, numerous examples, and every day things that happen in our life to show the "art of persuasion" or argument. Some I would never guess nor know until now. This is so interesting!

    1. The historical sources really do add to the nonfiction aspect of the book.

    2. The examples of historical events and other miscellaneous examples tend to help me understand and apply rhetoric a bit better to real life and what happens around me.

    4. I agree that when he explains his goals and gives examples in depth it make the chapter so much more understandable and interesting. I especially like examples when he related them to todays society.

  6. This was informative applying the difference of an argument and a fight to real world scenarios. I like how he used the evidence of divorced couples and married couples and how fighting/arguing can help or damage a relationship.

  7. I'm realizing that everyone uses rhetoric instinctively, but what the author is trying to teach you is how to control it and use it to your advantage. The author tries to teach you how to separate an argument from a fight, and focus on getting what you want instead of getting "points". I'm sure if somebody learned everything they could about this subject they would be a very good speaker.

  8. I found the way the author teaches us about arguing and fighting to be really interesting and helpful for everyday life because of the way he compared it to relationships. His opinions on advertising and seducing was kind of an "eye opener" as well.

  10. I liked how they told the difference and gave an example of how fighting and arguing are two different things but they can lead to some things, but I like how he spotted the difference.

  12. This chpater taught me a few helpful tips and also taught me the difference between an arguement and a fight. Before i wouldve looked at them as the same thing. I like that fact that hehad main oals for this chapter and gave well in depth examples.
