Chapter Ten

Turn the Volume Down

  1. The passive voice thing seemed like it could be very helpful in the future. I also liked that they are relating new stuff back to old stuff, like relating banter back to agreeing with someone and manipulating what they say.

  2. This chapter was about passive voice, backfire, and humor and i thought humor had many great examples and i agreed that laughing can persuade someone or just by you being witty.

    1. I feel like if you are either witty or laughing to persuade them by only these two things. I don't think that it would be very convincing if your being seriously or you wouldn't get your way as easily.

    2. I feel like humor makes people think they agree with you because your argument made them happy.

    3. Sometimes it might make them happy ^ ha-ha! Yea it would help to be a bit witty in an argument!

    4. I feel like a group of people will tend to follow the funnier person even if they aren't a great person, don't know what that has to do with your comment but thought it was a necessary thing to say.

    2. I feel like it's really going to help with the comebacks you think of an hour after the argument is over.

    3. Our class is just going to become a professional debate team and it will be fantastic.

    4. We should spend days just debating in class.

    5. I'm one of those people who think of comebacks an hour later like Reva mentioned and will therefore benefit from this chpater.

  4. I can't see how humor will help in an argument situation.. maybe it would lighten the mood but otherwise I am not sure! I thought the different types of humor/wit were very helpful! I loved the examples.

    1. Humor can provide a passive way of making points. Humor is often from shared experience so if it's about a topic you are both invested in you can show a bright side to your argument or a dark side to theirs.

    2. Exactly Keegan. People bond over sharing a laugh- That's why people laugh or crack jokes to make light of an awkward situation

  5. My brother in law once recommended using passive during an argument with my mother and it did NOT work. Humor didn't work either but the examples were nice I guess.

  6. This is a likable chapter because mood is interesting. The whole spectrum of human emotion is awesome and I love it. Mood makes the person who they are and their mood will come in the way with trying to get a point across. Use humor is what I got from it.

    1. I'm not the only one that thinks that this chapter was good, because dang it was a pretty good chapter lets be honest here.

    2. I think it's interesting that people's moods are so unique to themselves that they can react to something in a way that is completely opposite to another.

  7. I thoroughly enjoyed this chapter, mostly because it talked all about humor and I find that stuff quite interesting. The examples were also more reasonable than the other chapters, which made the information more understandable than other chapters in the book.

    2. I think so, too. Maybe the fact that it relates to us more than a lot of the rest of the book helps it to be more readable and easier to retain.

  8. My mom is really good a the "backfire" he was talking about but she doesn't let it end with me saying I'm not hurt anymore..
I loved reading the humor examples. This chapter was an easy read. But you have to be careful of the humor you use and who your audience is when you use it!

  9. I really liked reading about the different types of humor. I hear a lot of each type on a daily basis, but it was good to learn exactly what each category really deals with.

  10. KEeping your cool( using a passive voice) and using humor are very good ways to get your way or to tget people to agree with you- tried and true. Good examples in this one
