Chapter Twenty-three

Give a Persuasive Talk

  1. Most of the tools in this chapter seem "natural". Most of the time when you argue or make a statement you think of your introduction, delivery, style, and your arrangement. These tools will be helpful for a speech or presentation.

    2. I agree that these tools will be helpful, and that they can come naturally, but I think sometimes people overlook some of these steps.

  2. The five canons were interesting in the way they tell you to use them, the most interesting of them all is arrangement.

  3. This chapter taught me a lot about giving a persuasive speech. If I can remember this stuff it could potentially be very useful. I liked the Gettysburg Address example at the end of the chapter. I feel like this chapter really brought everything together.

  5. This chapter just reminded me of politics again, not in a bad way though. Just how they plan what they are going to say and how the time and everything all matters to shut down your opponent or win the argument.

  7. The speech that the author was telling us about, you know, the one with the leaf blowers and sound management in a rural town, would be a really hard message to convey to people in our current society. Think about all the Torgers out there with their big diesel trucks and suped up lawn mowers and their powerful rifles, and then try and tell them that they are making too much noise and that they shouldn't do these activities during these times. Good luck convincing those kind of people that sound management is necessary. Anyways, it's probably possible to get some people to stop using their leaf blowers all the time but there are still those ignorant people out there that are too stupid to care about other people's values and beliefs. I also found the part where he explained how to write a rhetorical speech step-by-step to be quite interesting and helpful, so, with any luck, I will probably come back to that if I find myself needing to get a speech done. This was a long comment, but this chapter made me want to punch somebody in the face for some reason.

    1. That's definitely an interesting reaction to this chapter. I can't really remember if he said where he grew up, but maybe he hasn't really lived in an area like ours. Or maybe we are just a super unique community.
