This chapter was mostly about patjos and how to control the mood of your audience. I found emulation interesting and the example of the three stooges with it. I also have experianced unannounced emotion, cuz if people say im going to be mad I emotionally prepare for it and the i dont get mad.
I feel like it is hard to control the mood in a way. And I agree, if you are some what expecting a certain reaction or emotion, it is a lot easier to mentally prepare for it.
I guess I don't fully understand what pathos are, but would pathos be self - control? I found this chapter to be one of the most interesting because of the elimination process and how to control the audience with pathos.
This chapter made me realize pathos is so much more confusing than I thought it was. There is so much you have to hide while arguing, and so many things you have to pretend to do.
I think most moms would be good at this because my mom only cares bout what other feel then her self but she could easily twist it and get what she wants which she usually does.
I find it hard to put your emotions on hold until the "perfect time", how do you know when to fire them to make them useful? I agree, there is so much to hide in an argument!
I honestly feel like that rhetoric is just getting really confusing. I kinda feel like my mind is being overloaded with so much information that my brain is going to melt down. Don't worry though, I still understand it.
The way I understand or maybe more remember pathos, is think of it as pathology. Pathology has to do with the brain or the study of mental health. In a way pathos is appealing to the emotions of others to get what you want, emotions come from the brain. I don't know that's just an idea..
I understand the relation between pathos and pathology. The story telling thing also makes sense but I still have a fiery hatred toward this book. Like the 3 yr old throwing a fit example...A 3 yr old is going to understand all that.. oh okay.
I'm with you Jen! You can't use sophisticated language like this against a 3 year old there's no way they'll comprehend it.. The scenarios such as that one are getting hard to read.
There was a lot of information in this chapter, and I found it pretty hard to take in. I did understand everything that was written in the chapter though, and also, he mentioned Matt Damon.
This take on pathetic and sympathetic might help me remember empathy and sympathy. The 'tell a story' trick might come in handy someday..towards the end of this chapter he touched back on ethos again this time relating it to humor and how that can calm them down and change the over all mood like story telling!
I found that "pathetic" has a different meaning now than it did before. There are also a lot of tools that you have to consider and use with pathos. It must take a long time to master pathos.
I like that he said to tell a story , because that really does work out... If you say that someone is an ass, everyone wants a reason why... Tell a story, and they are likely to agree with you
This chapter showed me that what I though of pathos, wasnt really everything to know. this chapter revealed that pathos are so much more confusing and complicated. I also like when he talked about not announing your mood before explaining something. Then people will meantally and emotionally prepare for it; which is not something you want when trying to win an audience over.

ReplyDeleteYes, I completely agree to your comment. This chapter does explain it alot better about controlling your audience.
DeleteI agree. It's weird to think about controlling your audiences mood so easily though.
DeleteI feel like it is hard to control the mood in a way. And I agree, if you are some what expecting a certain reaction or emotion, it is a lot easier to mentally prepare for it.
DeleteI also agree that when someone emotionally warns me for good, sad, or bad news i prepare for it much easier.

ReplyDeleteI also thought this chapter was super interesting, and it made me realize that pathos is actually super complicated.
DeletePathos are complicated but this chapter cleared it up :)
DeleteTo me, pathos were also complicated but I agree this chapter did a good job of clearing it up.

ReplyDeleteYes you have to hide your own feelings amd worry about others

DeleteI hate that you have to pretend, this book is for someone who is really into politicians who lie... so politicians basically.

ReplyDeleteI like that you are poking holes in this book. He's stretching these scenarios out so much and I aint wit it.
DeleteI think he's saying that 3 year old IS the example, not the 3 year old is giving you an example. Or, at least thats what I got from it.
DeleteI'm with you Jen! You can't use sophisticated language like this against a 3 year old there's no way they'll comprehend it.. The scenarios such as that one are getting hard to read.
DeleteI appreciate the fact that you guys aren't just accepting everything you are told

ReplyDeleteI liked that he talked about Good Will Hunting. I mean, what other book talks about famous actors to make a point about arguing?

ReplyDeleteI agree with the pathetic and sympathetic approach.
DeleteI really liked the whole "using humor to calm" thing. That is definitely a good tactic to use in any situation, really.
