Chapter Seven

Show Leadership

  1. I thought this chapter was basically about common sense. You can't be book smart but not street smart because then you'll seem uppity and won't be able to make decisions in a pinch because you'll overthink them. You also can't be just street smart because then you're not smart enough to make quick decisions. It seems like it was all stuff we should already have known.

    1. Yes, I agree on your comment that you have to be smart enough to make quick decisions.

    2. Yeah I feel like I already knew this stuff but they used the words "practical wisdom".

    3. A lot of it was mostly common sense, but I like that he kind of helps with realizing that there is a good way to balance street/book smarts.

    4. I was thinking bout the same thing! What if you appear that you think your better, then you most likely wont appeal to others. I agree, there needs to be balance.

    5. Yeah that's true, common sense is very important

    6. I agree that there needs to be a balance between street and book smart. It seems like basic common sence. you cant be one without the other.

  2. This chapter really can define the person that you are. I think that all people have both street smart and book smart but you are better at one than the other.

    1. True and if one is extreme, the other is extremely the opposite.

    2. I feel like this chapter also teaches you how to fake having one or the other.

  3. This made sense t me about the street smarts and the textbook smarts, because 've thought about it the same way, I mean it depends on the things your talking about and making a decision on for people to trust you but it really explained practical wisdom.

    1. Yeah this chapter kind of connected what you know about street and book smarts already to arguing.

    2. Yes i agree! This chapter really defines it.

    3. He's getting you to tell the difference from what applies to the current situation and what doesn't. People generally understand this, but people can sometimes not realize the difference when it comes to them in a real life scenario.

  4. I don't know why but I feel like this is common sense stuff, like I feel like the author repeats himself over and over but I liked the,"they should rule who are able to rule best." Quote. That was a good one. The presidents joke was also funny

    1. Yeah, there was a lot of repetition, but there was some valuable things in the repetition.

  5. I like the "bend the rules" concept. It's a good way to show leadership, in some ways. Really, I like all of the concepts mentioned in this chapter, but this one stuck with me.

    1. I really like the "bend the rules"concept as well! I do wonder if someone were to use these tactics if they would become a better leader?

    2. Who doesnt like someone who bend the rules, I mean no one wants to follow someone who follows all the rules then youre not a leader.

    3. I have to agree with Jen on this one if you're not one to form your own path and LEAD the way then you're no leader at all.

    4. The "bend the rules" concept was also one of my favorites, it seems to help individuals become better leaders. I wonder if it really works.

  6. I think a lot of what he talked about in this chapter are tools we already use in an argument. I do believe these are almost natural tools.

    1. I do think these are natural tools but what he's trying to get you to do is think upon them and use them when you don't instinctively use them.

  7. I felt like I already knew some of things he talked about in this chapter... It's almost as if he just wants these things ingrained into your brain so you can apply these steps in real life more effectively.

  8. I feel like this was a more basic and straight to the point chapter. He talked about things most people have a okay grasp on. Still informative

    1. I also found it understandable but I as well thought it was good information to have and he did a good job of tying it all back to arguing.

  9. The things covered here were basically just common sense. He said things that are just instinct or street smart. Like if you have a medical degree we'll trust you to take out an appendix over someone who can prove their wisdom on the bible.
More tools here: show off your experience, bend the rules, and appear to take the middle course.

  10. I feel that this chapter was mainly about common sense. I like the chapters concepts used as well. I agree that there needs to be a balance between book and street smarts, but of course everyones going to be better at one than the other.
