Chapter Eighteen

Speak Your Audience's Language

  1. The Bush presidential tools really surprised me! I never thought about the way you say things could sway the audience that much! What also surprised me was at the end when the example with, "does this make me look fat?" and the answer of " well it doesn't make you look thin."..NO that doesn't seem right! Haha. All together I understood these tools.

    1. Yeahh the thin thing still doesnt seem right because the person is still going to get angry at youu!

    2. I think if they're not really listening to you the thin comment could work. There would be a good chance that they could just hear the thin part. Usually when people ask that question they're just fishing for compliments anyway.

    3. I feel like its more of selective hearing, kinda like boys do all the time. Unless its interesting to them, then they will listen.

  2. Now this chapter is on the offensive side of things, i really understood what it meant by using reverse words and i find people doing this day to day and the code words they are talking about makes so much sense!

    1. I thought it was crazy how politicians plan using code words, and people don't even realize they are doing it.

    2. I agree, its almost like you have to watch everything they do to know what anything means.

    3. I agree..offense seems to be more simple. I see it everyday too!

    4. Its really insanely cool to see how just choosing words carfully can appeal to different groups of people that a candidate is speaking to

  3. I wouldn't think of Bush as smart enough to be that manipulative. However, it does make more sense how he won. I feel like Bush may have used code words manipulatively, but that in general they could be a useful tool. This chapter was very helpful and easy to understand.

    3. I'm thinking that Bush just wrote his speeches like he wrote an essay in high school and actually has no clue what he's even doing. Not saying I have no clue what i'm doing when I write an essay, of course.

  4. This chapter was kind of fun to read, but I don't like to talk about politics a whole lot so I kind of didn't enjoy it as much.

    2. please don't vote for Donald Trump

    3. I have to agree with Keegan and Cody. Politics can be boring and confusing, but it's a good idea to try to follow it a little bit. At least enough to make an informed decision. And yeah, please don't vote for Trump.

  5. I feel like this chapter covered on how to talk and persuade people in a certain tone where it can be taken very badly or the person who you are talking with doesn't understand enough to see that you kind of sound like a butthole.

  6. I find myself to sometimes be a pretty witty fella so I connected pretty well with this chapter. He brought up Monty Python so that made me happy. And politics made me happy also. I am happy.

  7. I really liked how took advantage of relating things to chimps and George Bush, with codewords and grooming, I don't know why it just had a really good flow to it. Also, reverse words are fun, and once again I like the examples used in the book.

  9. I gotta say, I was pretty impressed with Bush's code word tactics. I didn't think he had it in him. It's interesting to think about how these things are used in every day life.

    1. Bush is smart sometimes, he just comes off as dumb.

    2. I thought that his tactics were so great. He fooled so many people and didn't even realize it.

  10. I thought it was interesting how certain keywords can stand out to an audience and pursuade them without them even realizing it. This chapter was understandable and interesting, especially how easy it is for presidents to use only keywords to pursuade an audience.

    1. I agree with everything you mentioned, I kind of wonder how often I fall for these codes and keywords..

  11. I found code and code grooming very fascinating. It's insane to think that all of America fell not for what Bush was saying but the way he was saying it! THis chapter was really easy to read, I also took alot from it.
