This chapter had a lot of examples of fallacies in it and ive seen these in real life, actually all of them i just didnt know they were called "fallacies".
I knew a lot of the stuff he pointed out wasn't the complete truth. I thought it was interesting though that a lot of the fallacies he pointed out were arguments. I wouldn't think of a lot of these things as arguments.
I'm finding it quite easy to understand the difference between arguments and fighting. an argument usually has a positive outcome, and a fight doesn't! voilà!
I agree, there was alot of good examples of fallacies and that its interesting that they are actually called fallacies. This book teaches me something new everytime i read it! :)
I feel like the chapters are becoming easier to understand as we go. I think he is bringing all the stuff were learning together and relating it; I think that makes everything more clear.
I also understood the chapter; i love how at the end of the chapter "the tools" section usually sums up the whole chapter in case you dont understand something, it helps me alot anyway.
This chapter taught me a lot of ways to tell when large companies and politicians are telling the complete truth. This chapter also taught me a lot about how everyday arguments are filled with fallacies. I did always think the "if your friends jumped off a bridge would you?" argument was not very effective. This chapter could turn out to be very useful.
I completely agree with both of you, you two seem to know a little bit more than what I do so it helps me when you guys help out by saying stuff that I may not have cought!!
Wow so many examples of fallacies! I thought the sins examples were quite interesting.I understood this chapter pretty well. There was a lot to learn in this chapter!
Okay this chapter was sorta good, I liked the whole fallacies thing and how it is used in our everyday life, especially in politics. My mom is a big user of fallacies, I wonder is she is an expert in this.
1. I'm sick of hearing about the Simpsons. 2. His list at the top of page 146 really cleared everything up for me. It was straight forward and to the point. I liked the kid use of "why" I think "why" was all of our favorite word as young-lings. It sure was mine.
This was a pretty easy chapter to understand. I already knew about fallacies, and I imagine that most people do, but the examples were fun to read. They are also fun to use in real life, like as a joke.
Fallacies are so straight forward and easy to spot out I can't wait to apply this to a real life situation. Chapter 14 is such a relief after that last chapter!! I caught people using the fallacy of antecedent today actually but refrained from calling them out on it.
I actually enjoyed this chapter. It can be really fun picking out fallacies in any conversation/argument. There are, however, a lot of things I hadn't considered about fallacies, so it was interesting to learn.
I think for the most part I understand the 7 sins. I was amused that many of the fallacies he gave examples of were things i've heard periodically throughout life. I like how I actually know the name for them now.

ReplyDeleteAgreed and its just funny how weve used that saying so many tomes before and i never realized i would be learning about it as rhetoric language.

DeleteI have always thought that saying was dumb! Rhetoric language seems pretty difficult but once we get the handle we will be argue masters.
