Chapter Seventeen

Find the Sweet Spot

  1. This chapter really helps with understanding virtue.. it's the "sweet spot".. everyone's is different! I loved the conversation between virtue, disinterest, and practical wisdom. This chapter also talked about the tenses..which is still confusing to me! I actually understand phronesis too! Do any of you understand the tenses tool?

    2. I understand the future part of the tenses. If you're arguing in the future it hasn't happened yet and you can still change it. This makes it easier to argue about changing a policy, and why it could make something better.

  2. Sussing is actually very interesting, because it tells you whther the persuader cuts to chase or not and i thought the orange skin guy was funny im not sure if thats sussing or what kind of tool that was an example of though

    1. I remember that episode of house. Although the example was for phronesis because House was tuning in on what the patient needed.

    2. I am still a little confused about the whole sussing part, so I have no idea what your asking. The wording in the book is a little confusing.

  3. This chapter really broadened my understanding of disinterest, virtue, and practical wisdom. I feel like I can figure out the better candidate in politics, to a point, now. Phronesis just seemed like a part of practical wisdom to me though. I didn't feel like it was it's own thing.

    1. Lol yess this chapter helps us to understand if a person really means what they're saying or if they're lying to you to get what they want.

    2. That's what I like..we can kind of tune in on the best candidate! Yea, I agree with that!

    3. I agree. I think comparable experience can help with weeding out bad candidates as well.

    2. Me too! Sussing is such a weird word and how to apply it is kinda confusing.

    3. Sussing was a bit odd, but reading the tools part at the end kinda helped me understand it ,more

  5. Sussing is such a weird word but anyways I like the sweet spot thing and how everyone has a different one. Reminds me a lot of the problems that we have and how political parties want to make sure the way they word things hits that.

  6. Cause and caring are the two legs of the ethos stool and that's what I mostly got out of this chapter summed up. I can't tell you how frustrating it is for me to not know what that means.

  7. I really like phronesis. When you don't know enough about an issue, it ends up tying into practical wisdom and "sussing" which is also an interesting tool for persuasion.

    1. I agree sussing is a great tool just being able to cut to the chase in general is handy. Very good tool for persuasion,

  8. After reading this chapter I seem to have a much better grasp on phronesis though a week from now I won't remember the word or what it applies to but as of right now I understand. The parenting example really helped me what got me was when he started talking about politics and it was all down hill from ther.

    2. Same here. I think that a lot of this book is stuff we won't really remember or need, but the key elements will probably stick with us.

    1. For some odd reason I can't get into anything, only sometimes when the examples are very very true.

  10. I thought sussing was pretty interesting. I think it could be a hard concept to grasp, but a useful one when understood. I also liked the comparable experience. It could definitely help with a lot of different things, including politics.
